In this part of the museum the various steps in making
bells are shown : moulds, decorations, tools, casting
techniques. The tuning process is explained. The clappers
as well as the counterweights, the yokes, lead to the
understanding of how the bell, because of its accessories
becomes a musical instrument.

Around the central object of the Museum :
the "carillon of the Bastill", an illustration of the destruction of bells in times of war goes beyond the revolutionary period to the armement of Napoleon
and to the two world wars.

Bells have only been used to "mark" time through
sound-ritual time and work time. Religious or lay, their
musical expression has becomes diversified and refined
with the progress made in clock making. Some examples of automatic ringing devices, still functioning, illustrate
this conquest of musical time.

Small teaching or study carillons, popular keyboards,
rope training, swinging wheel, the ringing of the angelus, instruments of darkness : the sound landscape of our country is heard with every step the visitor takes.

The Museum offers its guests a journey around the world. On all continents the bell and its themes are touched upon : magic and religion, symbols of power and justice, ritual instruments, percussion to accompany dance …

A presentation of the techniques used in making bells for animals shows the visitor the difference between cowbells and bronze and bells made of coppered iron. Comparisons are made around the world according to the materials used, the shapes and especially the animals for which
the bells and crotals are made.

The "signal" bell is the one which accompanies man in his daily life, from his birth to his death, in times of joy and of suffrance, from the crucial moments to the futile. Signal object above all else, the diversity of its sounds is equal only to the variety of its shapes and decorations and
the uses derived from them.
