Techniques

In this part of the museum the various steps in making
bells are shown : moulds, decorations, tools, casting
techniques. The tuning process is explained. The clappers
as well as the counterweights, the yokes, lead to the
understanding of how the bell, because of its accessories
becomes a musical instrument.

Around the central object of the Museum :
the "carillon of the Bastill", an illustration of the destruction of bells in times of war goes beyond the revolutionary period to the armement of Napoleon
and to the two world wars.

Clock making

Bells have only been used to "mark" time through
sound-ritual time and work time. Religious or lay, their
musical expression has becomes diversified and refined
with the progress made in clock making. Some examples of automatic ringing devices, still functioning, illustrate
this conquest of musical time.
