In
the context of the European programme Pacte II, the project "Bells, carillons,
music" has enabled the creation of
a true European partnership network in the bell-related field. The programmes and the
efforts brought the three principal partners together. The Tellin Bell Museum in Belgium,
the European City of Music in Rethymnon in Greece,
the European Bell Institute in LIsle-Jourdain in France
have led to the creation of a series of permanent programmes, exchanges of information and
pooling
of know-how.This publication is considered the reflection of a pilot
project in Europe which, from 1996 to 1998 allowed for the development, in the
Midi-Pyrenees region, by the European Bell Institute, of two travelling exhibitions
intended to visit the countries of the European Union. It also made possible the
organization of two international bell conferences,
the first initiated by the European City of Music was held in Rethymnon on Crete in
October 1996 and the second initiated by the Bell Museum in the province of Luxemburg in
Tellin
in 1997.
The principal reports delivered at these symposia, as
well
as the introductory remarks at the exhibitions are found here. The diversity of the
subjects dealt with and their field of study, from the Neolithic to the contemporary, are
proof of the richness of bell art much like the multiplicity of different approaches, due
to the personality of the contributors.
These included decision-making officials, university researchers, musicologists,
independent campanologists, musicians, technicians and founders, witness the originality
of the creation of a contributor network, indispensable for the preservation of European
knowledge and know-how unique in the world.
